Back to Basics: 5 Things Clients Must Do Before and After Every Wax Appointment

We know that a successful wax appointment is all about the relationship between you and your client. There are things they must do and things you must do if you want a successful outcome post wax––and a repeat customer. There are many steps your clients can take before and after each wax appointment, but we’ve put together a list of our top 5 “must dos” that will make all the difference in their wax experience and your business. Check out our list in order of importance.

1. Get on a schedule

Waxing is best when done as a routine. A good rule of thumb is to let the hair grow for three weeks before the first wax, and then wait four weeks for each wax after that. Remind clients that regular waxing appointments will make their visits less painful since it breaks down the density of the hair, leaving them with finer hair–and less of it–to wax. Waxing and skincare are conscious choices, and so they should consider waxing an important part of their overall skincare routine too.

2. Keep it clean

We all feel better if clients come in clean before a wax appointment––so remind them to skip that workout please. Showering before your appointment is okay, as are lotions and deodorants, but do avoid being too oiled up and no self-tanners or body sprays.

3. Leave that hair alone

Remind your clients to leave the hair removal to you. It doesn’t matter what they look like when they come in, only how they look when they leave. Tell them that doing any sort of clean up prior to their appointment can affect the overall wax experience because hair that is too short will not grip the wax effectively (and it will hurt more).

4. Post-wax care matters

Certain areas of the body (chest, back, face, etc), and skin types are more prone to breakouts and bumps post wax, which as you know, is often caused by bacteria getting into exposed pores. A blemish control product applied twice a day post-wax will help keep the hair follicle clear, suppress bacteria, and jump start the skin’s healing process. Remind clients to bring a clean pair of underwear with them if getting a bikini wax, and encourage them to avoid exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and baths for the first 24 hours.

5. Exfoliate before and after

Topping our list: exfoliating. Something they should do before and after, exfoliating is crucial to the perfect wax. Nothing prepares the skin the way a soothing liquid body wash and exfoliating gloves can. The process ensures their skin is free of dead skin cells, and that both the skin and hair are soft prior to waxing. Regular exfoliation also encourages proper hair growth and can eliminate ingrown hairs from popping up post-wax.
